UG Corporate Football League Week 11 Recap
Week 11 of the University of Ghana Corporate Football League carried deep emotional weight as it coincided with one of the darkest days in Ghana’s sporting history. On May 9, 2001, 127 fans lost their lives in the Accra Sports Stadium disaster. In a moving act of remembrance, all matches this weekend began with a solemn minute of silence, a unified gesture to honour those who died for the love of football.
But beyond the football, this round of competition opened with a new wave of excitement. The Corporate Athletics contest officially began on Friday May 9th, injecting energy and variety into the league calendar. The standout event, the 60-meter sprint, was nothing short of electric. Ghana Armed Forces Officers Sports Club proved they don’t just dominate with boots but also with spikes, finishing first with sheer pace and precision. Ghana Football Association followed closely, securing the second position in what was a thrilling photo finish.
Now the main event, It took just three minutes for Ghana Armed Forces to flex their muscle, as their captain led by example with an early opener. They quickly settled into their rhythm, dictating the tempo with a commanding presence across the pitch. Their aggressive style earned them a penalty before halftime, coolly slotted to make it two. The second half saw more of the same fast, direct play down the flanks opened up the defense, leading to a third goal. A goalkeeping blunder sealed the fate of CBAS, allowing Ghana Armed Forces to net a fourth and complete a commanding performance.
Dubbed the “College Derby,” this match was intense from the first whistle. College of Health Sciences and College of Education battled fiercely, with both sides showcasing solid tactical organization. Midfield duels were fierce, and the goalkeepers on both ends had standout moments. Despite the attacking intent from both teams, the defenses stood firm. Neither side managed to find the breakthrough, and the game ended in a well-contested stalemate.
Telecel finally came alive and in stunning fashion. Though Ghana National Petroleum Corporation started brightly and controlled early possession, it was Telecel who struck first with a sublime free kick that beat the wall and the keeper. GNPC pushed forward in search of an equalizer, but a misplaced pass opened them up, and Telecel countered with pace to double their lead via a brilliant lob. In the second half, Telecel continued to frustrate GNPC and sealed their victory with a third goal — another calm finish after a fast break. This emphatic win marked Telecel’s first in the league and the first time they’ve scored three goals in a single outing. A memorable moment for the side.
With big names watching from the side lines including GFA’s Communications Director and former national U-20 goalkeeper Muntari Tagoe all eyes were on the showdown between Union Ghana and the Ghana Football Association. GFA stepped onto the pitch with purpose, but Union Ghana had other plans. Carrying an unbeaten record into the game, Union played with confidence and cohesion. A well-executed move in the first half saw them take the lead, sending their fans into celebration mode. GFA pressed hard in the second half in search of an equalizer, but Union’s defense held firm. A clinical second goal late in the game sealed a dominant 2–0 win, keeping Union Ghana's flawless run intact and handing GFA a reality check.
From powerful tributes to blistering sprints, fierce tackles, and emotional victories, Week 11 was one to remember. The Corporate Football League continues to be a celebration of competition, community and history this week, the memory of May 9 reminded us that football is not just a game; it’s a legacy.
