ALUMNUS DONATES TENNIS EQUIPMENT TO SPORTS DIRECTORATE
Dr. Twum Boafo, an alumnus of the University of Ghana (UG) has donated Tennis equipment to the University of Ghana Sports Directorate. The items included racquets, balls and sneakers.
At a short ceremony on the Tennis Court at the Sports Directorate, Dr. Twum Boafo recounted the journey of the donation and also described the gesture as spiritual and emotional. He stated that the interest began during an Alumni programme in New York in 2019 where he met the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ebenezer Oduro Owusu. Dr. Boafo happened to be the Guest Speaker for the occasion and spoke on the theme “The Role of Alumni: Development of State Institutions.” This he said spurred him on to leverage on the network he has in the United States of America to get some items in the sport he loves thus Tennis to support his university.
Dr. Twum Boafo also runs a Tennis Club in his hometown where he supports some children with scholarship package (laptop and stationery) for their senior high education. He hopes the University of Ghana through the Sports Directorate can tap into this resource for these children who are already playing the sport to further their tertiary education at UG to hone their talents and study as well.
He dedicated the whole philanthropic activity to his mother. He described her as the greatest woman on earth.
The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ebenezer Oduro Owusu receiving the items on behalf of the University thanked Dr. Twum Boafo for the kind gesture. Professor Oduro Owusu remarked that one of the priority areas of the University is partnership, especially with its alumni. He commended him for donating out of his heart and also in memory of his mother to keep the sports programme especially Tennis at UG running smoothly.
He tasked the Director of Sports, Dr. Bella Bello Bitugu and the Directorate to be good stewards of the items donated The Vice-Chancellor likened the relationship between UG and Dr. Twum Boafo as the mustard seed. He admonished the Sports Directorate to nurture the relationship to yield greater fruits in the near future.
The Vice-Chancellor and those present were assured by the Director of Sports, Dr. Bella Bello Bitugu of safekeeping and putting these items to use as envisaged.
The Acting Director for the Public Affairs Directorate, Mrs. Eccles Andoh, on behalf of the University, students and faculty thanked Dr. Twum Boafo for choosing to support the development of Tennis at UG. She added that the University will follow through with the relationship established to ensure it bears much fruit.
Also present at the ceremony were Professor Andrew Anthony Adjei, Coordinator of Vice-Chancellor’s Strategic Team, Mrs. Regina Afari Boateng, Assistant Registrar, Sports Directorate and staff of the Sports Directorate.
