UNIVERSITY OF GHANA SPORTS POLICY (UGSP)
Moving away from the Amalgamated Sports Club (ASC) system which was solely based on organising competitions for students, UG recognised the need to change the structure and procedure of administering sports on campus. Other reasons were to meet the expansion of UG which resulted in the creation of additional campuses such as, the Korle-bu and Accra City campuses. The transition from ASC to University of Ghana Sports Directorate (UGSD) was relevant as it aligned to the global changing trends of the oversight responsibility and direction of sports, which goes beyond competition. This turning point is also recorded in the United Nation Office for Sports for Development and Peace (UNOSDP) in 2005, by recognising the compelling power of sports to achieve broad development and social outcomes.
Following this milestones, UGSD was fully integrated as one of the 8 Directorates of UG in 2005. The new mandate of UGSD expanded to cover areas such as Sports for excellence, Sports for fitness and wellness, Sports for Persons With Disabilities/special needs (PWDs), Sports as an academic/professional endeavor, Sports for Development and Peace (SDP) as well as provision of extension services. Thus, the responsibility went beyond just involving students but all staff and members of UG community and the general public in some instances.
Since the establishment of the University of Ghana in 1948, during the time of the Amalgamated Sports Club up to the establishment of the Sports Directorate in 2005, there was no sports policy to guide and focus the activities of the Sports Directorate and the University. In this regard, the Sports Directorate, in consultation with the technical team and various sports experts, has designed a sports policy for UG. This policy is tailored at guiding and providing the framework for all the activities of the Sports Directorate so as to become a visionary example and the number one player in University Sports in Ghana and well beyond.
The UGSP is in the process of being approved by the University Management.
UNIVERSITY OF GHANA POLICY ON ADMISSION FOR ATHLETES STUDENTS (UG-PAAS)
The UG-PAAS is expected to promote the growth and development of students’ performance in sports, thereby creating a sustainable relationship between sports and academic performance. UG-PAAS forms part of UGSD reforms to discover and harness potential and talented young athletes and further provide them the opportunity to gain admission into the University of Ghana through the minimal entry requirements for degree programmes.
