COACH SAMORI BIDS UG FAREWELL
Dr. Samori Sekou Camara has called time on his role as the Coach of the University of Ghana Basketball Male Team effective 3rd June, 2019.
Before his official appointment as substantive Coach of the team in 2017/2018 academic year, he assisted his mentor Meme Falconer to win five (5) major trophies (1 GUSA, 1 Mini GUSA, 1 FASU, & 2 UPAC) between 2015 and 2017.
Achievement
During his tenure as Coach, he guided UG to win gold at the Ghana Universities Sports Association (GUSA) Games in 2018 at University for Development Studies, Tamale. He won back to back Universities, Polytechnics and Colleges Basketball Competition (UPAC) in 2018 and 2019 and also helped defend the Federation of Africa University Sports (FASU) trophy at University in Ethiopia in 2018.
Award
Coach Samori received the Best Coach of the Year Award at the 2019 UPAC Games. He won every competitive match during his tenure. He leaves a very good team blended with young and experienced players who can continue the fine legacy being built here on the campus of University of Ghana.
Captain’s Remark on His Departure
The Captain of the team, Abibu Aminu Adisa, a point guard and a level 400 student reading Economics and Statistics shared his views on his departure and how he improved the team.
“Personally I didn’t see it coming and I was sad when he told us. Coach helped us to understand the game better, built our mental strength and also helped develop our skills. He motivated us a lot and always challenged us to do extra and not feel complacent.”
Aminu added that the team remains committed because everybody wants to keep his position to continue the fine legacy of UG basketball and also be idolized like the Thams and Wolffs. He pledged the team’s maximum respect and trust for whoever is appointed as the new Coach for the team.
