Grace Obour Voted UG Sports Personality of the Year

University of Ghana’s sprint sensation and 2021 Ghana’s Fastest Human, Grace Obour has been voted the Sports Personality of the Year for the 2020/2021 academic year by the University of Ghana Student Representative Council at its Excellence Awards. Grace Obour represented Ghana at the African Games in Rabat, Morocco in 2019 where she won bronze medal in 400 meters.

Grace Obour who was nominated among four (4) other student athletes garnered 42.5% of the total 3,519 student votes to win the award.

Grace, who is currently in Level 300 reading Bachelor of Arts in Sport Studies and Physical Culture, in the year under review, won the 2021 Ghana’s Fastest Human with a time of 11:69 seconds in the 100 meters sprint in May 2021. She joins UG alumnus Benjamin Azamati who won the male category in 2018.

In September 2021, Grace Obour together with other Ghanaian sports personalities carried the Queen’s Baton Relay through some principal streets of Accra ahead of the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games in England.

An emotional Grace Obour in a short tête-à-tête with the Sports Directorate, expressed her excitement for winning the award and resolved to remain resolute in her studies and training in the 2021/2022 academic year.

“I was happy to be the only female athlete nominee in this category. My joy was made complete when I received the news of winning the Sports Personality of the Year Award. This shows my unrelentless hard work during the academic year. I am motivated the more to work hard this year not only on the tracks but also my academic work to have a fine balance between the two. I look forward to winning gold medals in the 400 meters and 4x100 meters for UG at the Ghana Universities Sports Association Games in April and also qualify for the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games in England.”

Grace extended her gratitude to Management and her Coaches at the Sports Directorate for the sturdy development she had gained so far.
