UG DIRECTOR OF SPORTS CHALKS ANOTHER MILESTONE
The University of Ghana’s Director of Sports, Dr. Bella Bello Bitugu has again made UG and himself proud by becoming one of the newest members of the Ghana Olympic Executive Committee. Dr Bitugu has achieved this feat of being elected to the highest executive body of the Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC) within a matter of one year. Last year, Ghana Universities Sports Association (GUSA) nominated him to represent GUSA at the GOC board of governors. His good work and impact within this short period, has helped him to easily win the elections to the highest executive body last Monday.
The Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC) is charged with developing and protecting the Olympic movement in Ghana with the mission to promote the ideals of the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) in accordance with the Olympic Charter and the Constitution of the CGF.
Dr. Bitugu, a colossus in the area of sports development and sports for development across Africa and the Globe will serve a four (4) year term on the GOC Executive Committee. The executive committee among others, provides policy direction for the GOC and responsible for strategies towards sports development strategies and Ghana’s participation in Commonwealth Games and Olympic Games among many other roles and responsibilities.
Dr. Bella Bello Bitugu who is an Executive Member of GUSA was appointed in January this year by the International Centre for Martial Arts for Youth Development and Engagement under the auspices of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) to serve a 3-year term on its Governing Body.
Undoubtedly, one of the African and Global experts, giants and managers of sports, Dr. Bitugu is the current Chair of the International Scientific Network on Sport for Development and Peace, a former board member of Football Against Racism in Europe, a former international board member for International Sport Platform at George Mason University in the United States of America, consultant and expert for FIFA, UEFA, European Commission, Austrian Government, Africa Union, UNESCO, United Nations Office on Drug and Crime, SOS International and Hermann Gmeiner Fond Deutschland, Ghana Football Association Appeals Committee member, Ministry of Youth and Sports Ghana, GIZ, the former Country Director of Right To Play Ghana among many others.
A very delighted Dr. Bitugu, shared his joy and what this means for tertiary sports and Ghana sports in general:

Clearly, a huge responsibility but I have no doubt that with the fraternities around me, the experience and lesson gathered so far, I will be able to go through to overcome the challenges and move sports development and sport for development in Ghana to a higher level.
