Akuafo Hall Wins 2022 Inter-Hall Athletics Championship
Akuafo Hall has been crowned overall champions of the 2022 Inter-Hall Athletics Championship held at the Athletic Oval on the University of Ghana Campus. The Hall won the Championship with a total of 25 medals (13 gold, 8 silver and 4 bronze) to beat Distance Education that won 22 medals (12 gold, 7 silver and 3 bronze) in a keenly contested competition.
In all, eight Halls participated in 31 track and field events in both men and women categories.
The athletes from the respective halls showed energy, enthusiasm and determination to win medals for their halls. Distance Education and Akuafo Hall went toe to toe right from the onset for supremacy in the track and field events. Distance Education’s dominance in the male category ensured they won 8 gold, 4 silver and 2 bronze medals.

Though Akuafo Hall were also tied on the same number of medals in this category, they came short of 2 gold medals which placed them second.
The Sports Secretary for the Distance Education Unit, Mr. Andrews Tetteh was elated about his side’s unprecedented feat in the UG Inter-Athletics Competition. I commend the team for showing skill and character to bring home the trophy in the male category and also placing second in overall, he added.
Akuafo Hall’s competitive advantage was in the female category where they won a total of 7 gold and 4 silver medals to leapfrog Distance Education on the overall ranking for the Athletics Competition.

Fifteen Years Record Broken
Rejoice Agbewodie of the Distance Education Unit broke the Javelin women record which had stood for fifteen years to set a new record of 41.75 metres.

The old record was set by Rita Petershie in 2007 when she made a throw of 38.21 metres. Rejoice also broke Millicent Njomaba’s record of 33.54 metres in Discus set in 2018 to set a new record of 33.57 metres.
Other four records were also broken in 200 metres women, 4x100 metres men, 5000 metres men and High Jump men. Each athlete who broke a record will receive a cash prize of Five Hundred Ghana Cedis (GH¢500.00) from the Sports Directorate.

Speaking at the closing ceremony, the Director of Sports, Dr. Bella Bello Bitugu expressed satisfaction with the performance of the athletes and spectating at the Athletic Oval after two years break in sporting activities on UG campus following the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic and the fact that the UG stadium is under refurbishment for the African Games in 2023.

He added that majority of the athletes who won the various events in track and field are beneficiaries of the University of Ghana Policy on the Admission of Athlete Students (UG-PAAS) and the University of Ghana Sport Fund (UG-SF). This showcase by the athletes vindicates the strategies and policies put in place by the Sports Directorate for the development of UG sports.
