The Minister for Youth and Sports Joins Union Club to Support UG Athletes

The Union Club has donated a cheque of Seven Thousand Five Hundred and Eighty Four Ghana Cedis (GH¢7,584.00) to the University of Ghana Sport Fund (UG-SF) to support student athletes. The Club made up of UG alumni and others from corporate Ghana, mainly seek for the basic keep fit needs of its members and use the opportunity for networking.

The Director of Sports, Dr. Bella Bello Bitugu in his welcome courtesies, introduced the Union Club to the Minister for Youth and Sports, Honourable Mustapha Ussif who presented the cheque on behalf of the Union. Dr. Bitugu lauded the good working relationship between the Sports Directorate and the Union Club that has existed over the past seven years. He added that the Union Club has supported three student athletes each year through the UG-SF since the 2018/2019 academic year.  

The Minister for Youth and Sports, Honourable Mustapha Ussif, presenting the cheque on behalf of the Union Club, commended them for supporting such budding athletes in the University who are the future stars of the country. He added that the kind gesture was worthy of emulation. He therefore called on other organisations and corporate Ghana to also contribute towards the University of Ghana Sport Fund and other sports development projects.

The UG-SF is an initiative by the University of Ghana Sports Directorate to motivate, support and facilitate admitted student athletes and to attract potential talents to enhance their admission to the University of Ghana. It is a form of support scheme that the University of Ghana Sport Directorate (UGSD) makes available to exceptional and less privileged student athletes when required and resources are available.

The scholarship is awarded on an annual basis and is available to undergraduate students only, both fresh and continuing students.  

Since its launch, three cohorts of students have completed school and are now spread across the globe working or on further studies. The UG-SF has since its inception catered for One Hundred and Ninety (190) student athletes.
