The University of Ghana Debate Society has won the 2022 Heritage Month Debate Championship after beating Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA) and Pentecost University.
Team UG represented by Mr. Emmanuel Akpagli, Miss. Lois Osei-Sekyereh and Mr. Joel Aboagye saw off GIMPA in the preliminary round to progress to the finals of the championship. They subsequently beat Pentecost University with an average score of twenty (20) from the panel of Judges to win the Championship.
The Coach of the UG Debate Team, Mr. Lawrence Nii Kotey Neequaye commended GIMPA and Pentecost University for participating in this year’s championship. Mr. Neequaye asserted that the exercise was very impactful and educative as the students not only engaged in discussions and debates surrounding the independence of Ghana but the role of the youth in making the nation grow even further. They also shared ideas on how best to use debate as a tool for the growth and development of young people across Ghana. It is the first of many steps towards building a regional bloc of great minds, he added.
The Coach commenting on UG’s performance stated that although the focus of this exercise was not about who wins, but rather the transformation that each student gets from the rigorous engagement on these important issues.
“I am excited that the team showed class and delivered speeches so good that our friends from the other competing institutions had a clear understanding of the standards they should aspire to. I am proud of all participants who represented Team UG.”
The Championship seeks to commemorate the independence day of Ghana and reflect on national issues that affect the socio-economic development of the country.
