UG Drawn in Pool A for FASU Games
UG Basketball Team
The University of Ghana male Basketball team, back to back Basketball winners of the 2016 and 2018 Federation of African Universities Sports (FASU) Games have been drawn in Pool A together with host Kenyatta University (Kenya) and University of Johannesburg (South Africa) at the 10th FASU Games. The Games are scheduled from 6th to 10th June, 2022 at the Kenyatta University, Nairobi, Kenya.
The University of Ghana Basketball team will commence its defense of the trophy on 7th June, 2022 against Kenyatta University, the host of the Games. UG will play its final game in the Pool on 8th June, 2022 when they come face to face with University of Johannesburg.
Pool B is made up of American University In Cairo (Egypt), United States International University-Africa (Kenya) and Makerere University (Uganda).
The top two Universities in each Pool progresses to the semifinals.
Coach Eric Agyapong Ankamah
Speaking with the Basketball Coach, Mr. Eric Agyapong Ankamah on prospects of defending the title, he remarked that UG is drawn in a tough group, however his team has the capacity and mental fortitude to qualify out of the Pool for the semis.
“It is certainly a tough pool especially playing the opening game against the host University. My guys have gone through various phases which have toughened them as well as build their mental strength to face such situations. The Accra Basketball League has also given us the experience, team cohesion and preparedness we need as a group to compete on the African level.”
Mr. Ankamah reiterated that they are ready to win the trophy for the third consecutive time.
The UG male Basketball Team remain undefeated in all tertiary competitions in Ghana and Africa since 2017 winning seven (7) trophies within this period.
The University of Ghana male Basketball Team currently sits top of the Division II of the Accra Basketball League with eleven (11) points and point difference of 191 after the first round.
