University of Ghana Debate Society to Participate in the 11th Pan African Universities Debate Championship
The University of Ghana Debate Society will make its 5th appearance at the 11th Pan African Universities Debate Championship (PAUDC) scheduled from Wednesday, 5th to Wednesday, 12th December, 2018 at the University of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.
What is PAUDC?
PAUDC is the biggest intercollegiate debate championship on the African continent established in 2008 by the University of Botswana Debate Masters Association. It is a platform that affords students from all universities within the continent to discuss issues of Africa and beyond.
This year’s championship is under the theme “Free speech. Unifying Africa” translated in Kiswahili; Uhuru na Umoja.
Training and Preparation
The team has been training for the past two weeks to ensure they achieve the goals of competing in this championship, that is, to win the championship. The team selected to represent UG can boast of astute debaters such as Solomon Omani-Mensah and Jeremiah Kobby Sekyi who have gathered experience over the past three years as members of the Debate Society.
Time to Win Laurels
Jeremiah Kobby Sekyi, the President of UG Debate Society and the only African at the semifinals of the 2018 World Universities Debate Championship in Mexico opined that it is time for UG to win laurels at such a championship. He reiterated that their coach, Antonio Edem Asinyo has taught them all the intricacies they need to know if they are to win.
Platform to Build Momentum ahead of WUDC
Antonio Asinyo is a veteran who has seen it all at World and African debate championships disclosed that the ultimate goal of his team is to win the trophy. Also, he believes this is a good exercise for his team, especially for Jeremiah and Solomon to be in the best of forms for the World Universities Debate championship (WUDC) later in December at South Africa.
