UG Tennis Team Placed Second In The African Games Aboakyer Tennis Invitational Tournament
The University of Ghana Tennis Team won silver in the Aboakyer Tennis Invitational Top 8 Tournament held at the University of Education, Winneba (UEW). The Tournament was organised by the 13th African Games Local Organising Committee (LOC) as part of publicity towards Ghana hosting the African Games in 2023.
Messrs. Wettey Emmanuel Akwanor and Ismael Nii Nortey Dowuona represented UG in the male category while Vanessa Kabukie Akuaku and Lawrencia Onome Aghorghorbia participated in the female category.
Team UG Performance
In the men category, Wettey Emmanuel Akwanor beat his compatriot Ismael Nii Nortey Dowuona 7-6, 2-6, 6-3 in a tough qualifying round to book a place in the quarterfinals. He however, succumbed to the number one seed of the tournament Samuel Antwi 6-2, 7-5.
Lawrencia Onome Aghorghorbia in the women category defeated Margaret Donkor of UEW 6-1, 6-0 to qualify for the semifinals. Vanessa Kabukie Akuaku also beat Fati Salisu of UEW 6-4, 6-1 to book her place in the semifinals. Both UG players met in the semifinals with Lawrencia Onome Aghorghorbia winning 6-4, 6-3, to make the finals. Lawrencia however, lost the final 6-1,7-5 to Precious Nunana.
Lawrencia Onome Aghorghorbia received a runner up trophy and a cash prize of One Thousand Ghana Cedis (GH¢1,000.00).
Wettey Emmanuel Akwanor and Vanessa Kabukie Akuaku will both represent University of Ghana at the 10th All Africa University Games at Kenyatta University, Nairobi, Kenya from 4th to 11th June, 2022.
Speaking at the end of the invitational tournament, the Coach in charge of Tennis at the Sports Directorate, Mr. Philip Gbedife noted the improvement of play in his players, the wit and character they exhibited at such a level. He added that the few mistakes they showed on the court will be addressed before they dual depart for Nairobi for the All Africa University Games.
