Birthed from the widely celebrated University of Ghana Community Games, the league aims to elevate the level of competitive football on campus while fostering stronger collaboration between the university and its corporate partners.

A Diverse Line-up of Teams

This inaugural season of the UGFL features an exciting mix of 18 teams, comprising 13 corporate organizations and five teams representing various arms of the University of Ghana. These include:

•              Corporate Teams: The Union Ghana, Telecel Ghana, Stanbic Bank, Zenith Bank, Forestry Commission, Ghana Civil Aviation Authority, National Petroleum Authority (NPA), Bui Power Authority, Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC), Media General, Ghana Armed Forces Officers Sports Club, Ghana Football Association (GFA), and Lancaster Accra.

This mix of industry giants and academic institutions sets the stage for a unique and competitive football atmosphere, highlighting the intersection of sports, corporate social responsibility, and student engagement.

League Format and Duration

The UGFL will run over a 20-week period, from February through July 2025. The 18 teams have been divided into two groups of nine. Each group will engage in a round-robin format, where every team plays the others in their group, culminating in a thrilling knockout stage to determine the overall champion.

The league promises not just spirited competition but also an opportunity for networking, talent discovery, and sports development. It’s expected to ignite a strong sense of community and school pride while providing a professional-style league structure that could serve as a model for other tertiary institutions.

The launch of the University of Ghana Football League is a landmark step in the university’s broader strategy to promote health, wellness, and sports excellence. It underscores UG’s commitment to harnessing the power of sports to connect academia with industry, and students with opportunity.
