Wɔgbɛ jɛkɛ 2022: UG Tours Schools Ahead of 8th GUDC
The 8th edition of the Ghana Universities’ Debate Championship, dubbed Wɔgbɛ jɛkɛ 2022 comes home to the University of Ghana this year from the 10th to 17th of October, 2022. The theme for this year’s competition is "Thinking Global, Acting Local; Celebrating Excellence While Shaping The Future." To this end, the UG Sports Directorate embarked on a tour to some institutions that will participate in this year’s championship as part of activities leading up to the event.
The tour, led by the Director of Sports, Co-chairperson of the Local Organising Committee and Co-patron of the Ghana Universities Debate Association, Dr. Bella Bello Bitugu, was to interact with management and students, to express support for the work done in promoting debating activities in the schools and reassure them of UG’s commitment to hosting an excellent tournament.
The schools visited included the University of Health and Allied Sciences; Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration; Accra Technical University; University of Cape Coast; University of Education, Winneba; Akenten Appiah-Menka University of Skills Training and Entrepreneurial Development, Kumasi; and the University of Energy and Natural Resources, Sunyani (via zoom).
Mr. Martin Amamoah, Dean of Student Affairs, Accra Technical University
The schools were selected based on their history of debate participation and the need to further support their debate societies. The tour provided an avenue for open interaction on how to realize this goal in each of the universities. Management and students of the institutions visited expressed their gratitude to University of Ghana for taking the time to call on them.
The last time a debate host institution embarked on a tour of schools was in 2015, when the University of Ghana hosted the Pan African Universities Debate Championship (PAUDC). The competition recorded the highest participation of Ghanaian tertiary institutions in PAUDC.
