University of Ghana Basketball Team Celebrated at Basketball Honours Awards
The University of Ghana Male Basketball Team was celebrated at the maiden Basketball Honours 2022 organised by Rite Sports Limited for their laurels and consistency in national and international competitions.
University of Ghana was awarded the biggest gong at the award ceremony for winning nine (9) major trophies in three championships locally and internationally. UG won the Universities, Polytechnics and Colleges Basketball Championship (UPAC) consecutively for four years from 2016 to 2019.
UG also won the Federation of African Universities Sports (FASU) Games back to back in 2016 and 2018 at University of Johannesburg, South Africa and Mekelle University, Ethiopia respectively. The UG Male Basketball Team famously known as the “Guerillas” won the 2017 Mini Ghana Universities Sports Association (GUSA) Games and further capped it with a back to back GUSA gold medals in 2018 and 2020.
The second honour for UG on the night was an award for consistency in all these competitions over the period. The UG Male Basketball Team has had four (4) different Coaches and several players coming through the trophy laden period. These changes made the team grew from strength to strength as the team never lost a game in any tertiary competition both home and abroad from 2016 till June 2022.
These successes chalked by the Team can be traced to strategies and programmes put in place by the Sports Directorate of the University of Ghana to attract the best talented and brilliant student athletes from the senior high school levels through the University of Ghana Policy on the Admission of Athlete Students (UG-PAAS). These gems upon admission are further supported with their academic user fees and other bursaries through the University of Ghana Sport Fund (UG-SF) through a competitive selection process. The Sports Directorate has structured technical programmes in place for all disciplines including basketball for developing and nurturing of skill and knowledge of student athletes to reach their full potential. This is bearing fruit as manifested in basketball here and other disciplines elsewhere. The Basketball Team has competed in the Greater Accra Regional Basketball League over the years, participated in special basketball clinics organised by the Sports Directorate and Rite Sports Limited.
The Team currently sits top of Group A in the Greater Accra Regional Basketball League Division II.
